MusEdit is a powerful yet inexpensive music notation editor:

MusEdit comes with a printed, well illustrated, 284 page manual. MusEdit runs on Windows Vista and older versions back to Windows 98, but unfortunately it doesn't run on the Mac unless you have the software which can simulate Windows on a Mac, such as Boot Camp (which comes free with the Leopard OS) or Parallels Desktop for Mac.
